About Sales Tax Calculator
Sales Tax Calculator answers two everyday questions instantly: "what will this cost with tax?" and "how much of this total was tax?" Pick your state, and the tool applies the 2026 state rate plus your state's average local rate, both of which you can override with your city's exact rate if you know it.
Built for both directions
Add mode starts from a sticker price and adds state and local tax. Reverse mode starts from a receipt total and works backwards to the pre-tax price, which is handy for expense reports, invoices, and bookkeeping.
Real 2026 rates, all 51 jurisdictions
Rates come from the Tax Foundation's July 1, 2026 midyear table: the statutory state rate plus the population-weighted average local rate for each state and DC. Special cases are handled, including the five states with no statewide sales tax, Alaska's local-only taxes, and the mandatory statewide local rates baked into California, Utah, and Virginia figures. Each state also has its own page, like the Texas sales tax calculator, with rates preloaded.
